10 Things You Should Know from the PSFK Conference

I've been away the past couple days in NYC for the PSFK Conference because my poster (displayed below, bottom right) won the PSFK Conference poster design contest:
It was a great opportunity to network with the most creative, innovative minds in the advertising/marketing/digital industry. I felt out of place with my Razr phone, while everyone was tweeting away on their iPhones. I got to get with the times!

Here are the top 10 things I learned and you should know too:
1. "SMALL IS SEXY" - according to TreeHugger.com founder Graham Hill. Small cars, small houses... we need to really think about our purchasing decisions and whether the crap is worth the space.

2. Help Remedies is redefining medicine packaging
3. The future of healthcare has arrived--you can now email, IM and text your physician through services like Hello Health.

4. The Tower Bridge Tweets. Kevin Slavin, co-founder of area/code, emphasizes that through mobile and digital technology we are treating objects more like people! Google Eija Ritta.

6. Parsons' Dean of Fashion Simon Collins paraphrased YSL, that YSL wish he invented blue jeans. WHY you may ask? Because we can never get ourselves to get rid of them.

7. Quotes of the Conference go to meetup.com founder Scott Heiferman:

  • "Feeling the rapture of each other is the future"
  • "It's NOT DIY, it's DIO... do it ourselves" (referencing other panelist John Geraci's site diycity.org)
8. BOXEE is the new way to watch TV online.  Boxee founder Avner Ronen quoted Jurassic Park, "Life finds a way" to describe how people will always find a way to get free entertainment online... so just give it to them.
9. Founders and couple Marc and Sara Schiller started The Wooster Collective website that showcases street art... such as Mark Jenkins' meterpops in D.C.
10. 70 years ago, GM sponsored the 'Glimpse into the Future' exhibit at the World Fair in Queens.  Thirty years later, the SAME 'Glimpse into the Future' exhibit was shown.  A lot can be said for our future, that chances are it won't be much different but hopefully better.  GM also didn't predict its current predicament.

  1. I can't imagine a world where the French invented blue jeans. They're so quintessentially American.

  2. Collins is misusing the Saint Laurent quote, which isn't about timelessness or endurance but about the expressivity of jeans. You should read "The Jeaning of America" by John Fiske, which is about how jeans relate to the American myth.

  3. I can't imagine a world without the GM.
